The Drill: Play the Wall

Description: A fly ball hit to the fence is one of the toughest plays for an outfielder to make. They have a number of things to worry about, most imporatntly, running into the fence and surviving.

Instructions: To teach an outfielder to play the wall, coach them through a simple progression, starting at the wall. Place a bucket of ball 30 feet from the fence. Have the outfielder begin by standing with one hand on the fence. Throw pop flies so the the fielder has to keep track of the fence while making the catch. Throw some balls shorter and some longer (over the fence). Throw some to the left and some to the right. As the fielder gains confidence, move the pail of ball further back until you are at least 100 feet away. If the field has shown they can make this play, move the bucket closer and repeat the progression, this time with the fielder starting 10 feet in front of the fence. This time, the fielder should be taught to first find the wall by running to the wall, keeping their eyes on the ball, and feeling for the wall with their closest hand. Once they have found the wall, they can then adjust to the flight of the ball. continue moving the bucket of ball further from the fence and moving the outfielder starting position further from the fence.
