2B - The Second Baseman is a player with range and a quick glove. A strong arm, while an asset at any position, is not critical at second base as the throwing distance is considerably shorter than from the left side of the infield.

Beginner: There are two important plays for the beginning second baseman. The first is the routine ground ball to the second baseman and the easy throw to first. Ensure the fielder focusses on making the catch on the groundball first. There is plenty of time to make the short throw. The second important play is for the second baseman to cover second base on a ground ball to the opposite side of the diamond with a runner on first. By covering 2B, the throw from the shortstop or third baseman is shortened up for less chance of error on the force play.
Intermediate: Turning a double play is a rally killer for the defense. 80 percent of double plays involve the second baseman. Most often their role is turning the double play, or making the catch at second and the throw to first. A quick transition and an accurate throw are more important than a hard throw. On a ball hit to the thirs baseman or shortstop, the second baseman runs to the back half of the bag, furthest from the runner approaching from first. From this position, after catching the ball, the second baseman can move straight towards first to make the throw, step to the inside or outside of the diamond, or stay to the back side of the bag, to avoid the runner
Advanced: On balls hit deep to right field and right center, the second baseman is the cut off man. It is their job to run onto the outfield and be the relay to the designated base. The catcher is the decision maker and should yell where to throw the ball. The second baseman needs to learn to play the ball in a strong throwing position. As the throw from the outfield approaches, the fielder turns their feet sideways and catcher the ball beside them, allowing for a quick transition to throwing.

Drill:The ball relay drill is an excellent way to work on positiong and quick ball transfer. Form two or more lines of at least 4 players, spaced equally apart. A player at the end of each line begins with a ball. On go, the players must relay the ball, to the end of the line and back, each player must play the ball. Put your middle infielders in the middle of the line so that they must relay throws. have them work on their footwork to get them in sideways postion to make a quicker throw. To increase the degree of difficulty, add distance between players. To practice additional game situations, make each throw a one-hop throw to make the fielders adjust and postiion their bodies/feet quickly..
The Dream Play: The “Dream Play” for the second baseman is the sharp ground ball up the middle with a runner on first. A diving catch and a flip from the knees to the shortstop covering at second.
